Look Down, Clean Your Carpet!

It may seem as though cleaning the carpet is unimportant. All in all, it is only the material on which one walks in the house. But is it really that unimportant?

It should be said that people often notice what is different from what they usually see: a big stain on a white carpet, dust stuck in a blue carpet, a carpet that is so worn out it has adopted the form of the furniture that has always been on it. You don’t want that, do you? Then be proactive and clean your carpet, because a carpet that is well taken care of will last a lot longer than one that’s been left out to dry.

Here are couple of unusual tricks to wash away stains from your carpet. Note that this does not replace a thorough cleaning of your carpet with the conventional methods.

Blot, Do Not Rub

The funny thing is, whenever someone drops food or liquid on a carpet, the first reflex will be to rub as hard as possible on the carpet to try to take out the food or the liquid that has spilled. You shouldn’t do that. First, it only helps the food or liquid to spread deeper in the carpet. Second, by rubbing the carpet too hard, you might damage it. Third, depending on what’s spilled, you may stain your carpet forever.

What you should do is blot the portion of the carpet that has been stained, with a sponge or any clean cloth that has blotting properties. You should always blot from the outside to the inside of the carpet to be more effective.

Club Soda and Blot

It may seem a bit weird, but club soda is effective against beer and wine stains. Again, you need to blot the area that has been stained by beer or wine with a cloth wet with soda. If that doesn’t work, mix one-part of white vinegar with one-part of water and use a handheld sprayer to spray the area that has been stained. Wait 10 to 15 minutes, then blot the area with a clean sponge or clothe. Once the stain is gone, rinse the carpet with warm water, while brushing it into its natural direction.

Shaving Cream, but Don’t Shave

Shaving cream is good against general stains: it will remove just about every type of stain. You only need to let it set for about 30 minutes, then blot away the shaving cream with a dry white cloth. You then should proceed with the one-part water and one-part vinegar solution (same as last the Club Soda and Blot technique).

How to Ret Rid of Chewing Gum

You shouldn’t normally have to remove gum from the carpet of your house. If, however, an accident happens, you should know that the best way to get rid of gum is to freeze it. Use small blocks of ice to freeze the gum. Once the gum is frozen solid, use a spoon to remove it.

Wash Away Grease with Detergent

It comes as no surprise that detergent is great against grease. Use one or two drops of grease-washing detergent with one cup of water. Spray it all over the grease-stained area of your carpet. Finally, blot it out with a clean dry cloth.

You may need to do this technique a couple of times.
